HISTORY OF THE MOUNT ALVERNIA CORNWALL COLLEGE SINGERS
In Recognition of the group's first year Anniversary: Renaissance November 20, 2011 to Present
Born in the early 1980s, the MACC singers has decades of experience, that comes to life through the voices of each promising member. Initially, the exceptional guidance of Choral Director Mrs. Marguerite Vernon, was instrumental in the development of the MACC Singers throughout their early years as they honed their craft. Presently with the likes of Mr. Vinton Haughton, Mr. Gregory Smith and Mr. Jaime Hutchinson, the 32-member team has grown to become a prominent and well-respected ensemble. On their later journey they had help from vocal trainers, namely, O'Neil Jones (Former CC Boys Choir director), Rory Frankson (renowned vocalist and past Cornwallian) and Avory Crooks-Campbell, music educator.
The group was restarted in November of 2011 by Cedron Walters (Cornwall College Choir Director) through a collaborative effort with Kriston Gordon (President) and Mr Vinton Haughton (Staff Advisor) of the Mount Alvernia Ensemble. The idea was readily welcomed by the Principals of both schools. With their rich tradition of excellence in music, they were booked for performances in the Christmas season and many persons were wowed by their abilities.
In their reanissance year, their intention was to enter the JCDC Choirfest Competition and compete against some of the best high school choirs in Jamaica. They entered 21 items in the JCDC Music Festival and the Choral Music Category. With numerous rehearsals, hard work, determination and parental and staff support, the MACC singers conquered and got Best High School Choir Performance and Champion Choir defeating formidable choirs. They also received the Best School (Intermediates) in Music at the JCDC St. James Evening of Excellence.
After their amazing renaissance season, the group has on numerous occasions, demonstrated its strength in the field, through the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s (JCDC) and the Western Jamaica International Music Festival (WJIMF) without fail. Though both choirs took some time to adjust to each other; as time progressed they became more of a family and their voices became more in tune. The MACC Singers hope that this becomes a trend and they continue to do excellent work.
